Serena Moon ... and The Fine Art of Face-sitting

¤*.¸¸.·´¨`°*» For more visit: PermanentObscurity.Com
Eric Stanton: The Fine Art Of Facesitting : Permanent Obscurity

Face-sitting of course is heavily referenced in the artwork of Eric Stanton. In some ways it's a staple of female domination scenarios, because what could be more humiliating or shameful as a man than to be conquered and subdued in that way? What could be a more clear display of subjugation than that? Kissing a woman's feet is sinking pretty low on the scale of surrender, pretty much an acknowledgment of abject slavery and a complete renunciation of pride. But then finding yourself below her ass, conveniently used as a seat cushion is really pushing the boundary forward a notch.

When it comes to being "topped," it's about as topped as you can get. Being her bottom, in her bottom is almost overstating the case. You've gone way beyond ass-kissing to form a whole new communion.

Yeah, it's vulgar, I know. And I don't need to mention that when it comes to face-sitting there's a certain degree of shock value, some crass humor involved. Not to mention that the act has a subversive quality, which seems to go contrary to standard feminine behavior. In fact, face-sitting may be the most unladylike practice I can think of.

In my private life, I have to admit, I don't like it much. I mean, having a naked butt on my face: getting intimate with her a-hole. (Much as I wish that weren't true.) Aside from the weight of it being too heavy for comfort, a stinky butt is a stinky butt, whether it belongs to your girlfriend or wife or Rachel Welch in her prime. But to this day there remains something startling, even jarring, about the imagery connected with facesitting.

Or maybe that's just a typical guy's view (with a guy's inbred terror of having his masculinity squashed). I mean, the thought of a subjugated male allowing himself to be sat on—his face wedged deep where the sun don't shine ... there's something about the very idea that stops me cold, carries with it a trace of boyhood fear.

Face-sitting of course is an important pychosexual element in PERMANENT OBSCURITY, particularly as it comes from someone in the story named Serena Moon. "Obscurity" as in: "It's dark with my face wedged up here!" "Permanent" as in being butt-snuffed, which is where things lead ... if it's where you wanna go ....

Russ Meyer, All American Outsider & Padre of Sexploitation Cinema!

¤*.¸¸.·´¨`°*» For more visit: PermanentObscurity.Com

Russ Meyer : Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! PermanentObscurity.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Russ Meyer : Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls, PermanentObscurity.com
Russ Meyer, you gotta love him. When you're talking about true outsider artists or demented "auteurs" in American film culture, he's near the top. No question about it. This is because he not only directed movies his own way, he also cast, produced, shot, edited and distributed them (and to this day his family still owns all the film rights)! Maybe the only person in film history you can compare him to—in terms of complete ownership and control and productive individualism—is John Cassavetes.

Russ Meyer, of course, was a sexploitation filmmaker. That was his medium—and how he chose to express his creativity. So his films are always deeply rooted in sexuality—some might say twisted sexuality (as if there might be any other kind) -- the battle between the sexes, issues of masculinity—or the lack of it (as in Lorna, Common Law Cabin, even Beyond the Valley of the Dolls). Often dissatisfied, uncontrollable, if not overbearing, women were at the center of some disruption. The male terror of being ineffectual, upended, cuckolded, and shamed often loomed large. In Russ Meyer films, amply endowed (and often over-sexualized) actresses were cast as the stars. The men—regardless of how large they were, or how hard they tried assert their manhood—always seemed to be diminished, to be rendered helpless in the presence of these haughty, intimidating females.

Russ Meyer : Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! PermanentObscurity.com

His first success, The Immoral Mr. Teas (1959), launched a subculture—a sexploitation subgenre—"nudie-cuties." And soon other filmmakers and producers would join in, contributing their own variations (while also cashing in), including Hershel Gordon Lewis, David F. Friedman, and Doris Wishman. Sexploitation cinema would find its strongest auteur in Russ Meyer, whose films were always gorgeously shot and energetically (some might say kinetically) edited. As artifacts of cinematography his films could be appreciated as museum-worthy art—and his films have had retrospectives at institutions like M.O.M.A. in New York City.

Nearly all of his films were self-produced and self-financed. This is important in understanding the creative bubble that Russ Meyer lived in and the eccentricity of his work. He was an outsider and operated far from mainstream Hollywood and the European art film leanings of NYC. After the success of The Immoral Mr. Teas (which was shot for 24K and would gross over 150K), he was able to bankroll his own projects with little outside interference.

Now was this a blessing or a curse, artistically? Some might suggest that living in a state where no one challenges creative decisions is not always the optimal situation. Great artistry, it might be argued, often emerges through give and take, through conflict and creative friction —sometimes even from negotiating compromise. A strong independent producer—just like a committed book editor—can help in contributing a fresh, outside perspective in shaping and defining a project—allowing for a work of narrative art to be the truest manifestation of itself. The fantasy of a lone, inspired genius taking dictation from God, producing fully mature and polished first drafts—is mostly that: a fantasy.

Russ Meyer's narratives are not always the most linear and coherent. Even he was honest enough to admit to that. Writing and structure were not his strong suit. And he often employed a number of screenwriters to contribute to his films while he busied himself with the look of the movie. The most famous of these writers, of course, was tabloid film critic, Roger Ebert.

Russ Meyer and Roger Ebert : PermanentObscurity.com

Ebert (often using a pseudonym, so as not be associated with films that were rated X) and Meyer would actually work on four of his most over-the-top projects—each more progressively demented—Beyond The Valley of The Dolls (1970), Up! (1976), Who Killed Bambi? (1977; never completed), and Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens (1979).

Russ Meyer : Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls, PermanentObscurity.com

In his life, Russ Meyer had the opportunity to produce two studio films (both for 20th Century Fox), which included Beyond The Valley of The Dolls and the rarely seen The Seven Minutes (1971). After that he was no longer welcome by studio heads who openly disparaged their association with Meyer, this pornographer-cum-pervert (while, of course, perfectly happy to collect any cash he made for the studio.)

Was Russ Meyer a pervert? He would admit to such in an interview with John Waters, saying it was "easier" just to answer yes to that question. Was Russ Meyer a pornographer? Not by post-'70s sex film standards: he never made a true porno.

Russ Meyer : Supervixens : PermanentObscurity.com

The era of commercially viable "sexploitation" came to a close after the first real XXX feature appeared in 1971 with Howard Ziehm's Mona. The final nail in the coffin for '60s-style sexploitation was the surreal success of Deep Throat, which signaled in the "porn chic" era. And while many sexploitation filmmakers—including Radley Metzger, Doris Wishman, Roberta Findlay—slid into hardcore, Russ Meyer resisted, even though he could've made huge money. In some ways—much like other sexploitation figures of his day, most notable fetish artist Eric Stanton—he was a product of a different time, emerging from the era of burlesque, where larger-than-life voluptuous women and the "tease"—as well as the unspoken "promise" of sexual pleasures to come—played a big part.

Are masochists the ultimate romantics? (Or the inspiration for the character of "Baby" aka Sebastian in PERMANENT OBSCURITY.)

¤*.¸¸.·´¨`°*» For more visit: PermanentObscurity.Com

As a former Catholic schoolboy, I've often wondered about this, even obsessed about it. And now when I say "romantic" I mean it in the classic sense: someone who idealizes the notion of love and self-sacrifice (well apart from any reality), as Romeo did in Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet -- someone in love with the idea of love (above and beyond actual sex). And masochists also being people who idealize the PAIN of love and longing. In other words, to suffer pain as a demonstration of the intensity and purity of love, as Jesus Christ did on the cross. Isn't Jesus Christ the ultimate romantic and masochist? He's the Catholic ideal and one I grew up with. In the New Testament, it’s clear that he knew what he was getting into: he could foresee his own crucifixion and he enabled it. How much did Jesus love you? the priests would ask us uniformed kids. Enough to die for you. Not only die for you, but suffer agony for days on a cross, after being humiliated and tortured. This is the kind of love that demolishes any notion of self-hood, both physical and mental. The primitive animal side of us innately strives for self-preservation while the angel, our highest good (and link to God) exists to override that: subdue or deny ourselves, even at the expense of our own lives.

Think of it: Catholicism is obsessed with the idea of suffering, of misery. Christ is at the top of the pyramid because he suffered the most. It was God humiliating Himself and debasing Himself before his own cruel creation: humanity. But the whole religion is full of others who have willingly, gratefully suffered for their love embodied in "God." Masochism is not only implied and appreciated in Catholicism but sublimely cherished. And the reward for all self-sacrificing saints is Heaven.

St. Lucy, "the virgin saint was subjected to a common list of legendary tortures -- burning, boiling oil, teeth drawn, breasts sheared, etc. But it was Lucy's eyes that attracted us, for they were reputedly torn out and miraculously restored." (reference: http://vrc.ucr.edu/luci/StLucy.htm)

Richard Perez: Are you bipolar? PERMANENT OBSCURITY

PERMANENT OBSCURITY: Or A Cautionary Tale Of Two Girls And Their Misadventures With Drugs, Pornography And Death: by Richard Perez, Perez Richard : PermanentObcurity.com : PERMANENT OBSCURITY: Or A Cautionary Tale Of Two Girls And Their Misadventures With Drugs, Pornography And Death: by Richard Perez, Perez Richard : PermanentObcurity.com : PERMANENT OBSCURITY: Or A Cautionary Tale Of Two Girls And Their Misadventures With Drugs, Pornography And Death: by Richard Perez, Perez Richard : PermanentObcurity.com

What made you write PERMANENT OBSCURITY?

I wanted to do something very different from my first (The Losers' Club), which was a quasi-documentary style, neo-realistic romantic comedy.

So how is this different?

It takes its influence from exploitation cinema rather than slice-o-life neo-realistic drama. PERMANENT OBSCURITY is actually my version of a sexploitation drama, in particular referencing those films from the 1960s and 1970s.

Why the 1960s or 1970s? What makes that era so special?

It was before "political correctness" came into effect, which lends more raw honesty to it. I'm a big fan of politically incorrect comediennes like Sarah Silverman anyway; politically incorrect humor is like subversive art in that it's often jolting; it has the capacity to awaken you.

Why do you need to be awakened?

Because, like most people, I'm usually sleep walking. Or numb. Or whatever you want to call it. In order not to succumb to perpetual anxiety attacks, human beings are in denial about everything: down to the fact that they're going to die. Are dying.

But why sexploitation specifically? As opposed to horror?

Horror is done to death. How many more vampire and zombies stories do we need to see before we drop into a coma? Sexploitation, which I often find more subversive than horror, hasn't really been reexamined. So this is like revisionist sexploitation -- through female protagonists -- and the exploitation this time runs both ways.

What's subversive about a pair of big tits?

There's more to sexploitation than tits. There's gender politics, there's the power dynamics (which questions "status") and the subversive power of sexuality, which makes most of us uncomfortable on some level, as it seems to challenge moral and ethical behavior.

Is PERMANENT OBSCURITY anti-feminist?

I don't see it that way. I was totally in the head of Dolores Santana, the female narrator, as I was writing it. If anything, writing this book made me more aware of how women are vulnerable: emotionally, psychologically, physically. I definitely have more empathy now.

More empathy in what way?

Well, let's take the physical aspect: the way women are always being hit on and harassed, which is something you don't have a clue about when you're a guy. Guys are ignored. Even in bars. You don't get free drinks, but you also don't have to put up with corny pick-up lines. There's much less bullshit directed at you as a guy, much less flattery. And that's a good thing. Men don't typically think about being raped either unless they're in prison. But rape is always a very real possibility with a woman -- a huge threat that looms over a woman's life ... because there's always that possibility: being the target of male rage or violence. It's an unfair balance in nature. And in writing PERMANENT OBSCURITY, I saw how Dolores and Serena were always vulnerable that way; it made me worry right along with them. Serena, in particular, is a beautiful woman who was always an object of lust, and this brought her unwanted attention and unhappiness mostly; it even interfered with her normal development as a person.

How would being beautiful interfere with being normal?

Well, it often does. A woman who is perceived as an object of lust, and who's accustomed to being perceived that way will always be "on," will always see herself as delivering a "performance" of sorts. A beautiful woman is like a performance artist really, and her femininity is just part of an artificial persona. And that's how Serena sees herself: a "fake." Her body and looks are what "make her special" in many ways, and she hates herself for it. Or resents it, while neurotically embracing it too. The joke about her butt being perfect and her name being "Moon" is deliberate of course; talk about being resentful for a physical attribute. That really comes out in the book, and she acts out this resentment -- exacts her revenge in the most perverse way. Not just against the writer of her scenario, but against all men, in general. My favorite line of the book is when Dolores says, "What I wouldn't give for a punishing ass like Serena's!"

So is the story of PERMANENT OBSCURITY mostly about Serena?

It's a mutual misadventure between Dolores, the narrator, and her best friend, Serena. But Serena looms large in Dolores' pot-soaked brain. Serena is the one person she'll never forget in her lifetime -- that's how big a part she plays. It's Dolores's recounting how her obsession with her best friend brought her a shitload of pain. Kind of a sad story, really, which Dolores alleviates in the telling with her relentless sarcasm.

Why did you choose a woman's voice -- a female first person narrator to tell the story?

I thought it would be fun. And it was. If you're a guy, it's liberating to write from a totally opposing perspective. Females characters are also granted a much wider range of emotion, and that was a blast. I'm an emotional person anyway; probably too emotional. Emotions, not rational thinking, rules my life and influences nearly all of my choices, and boy does this get me into trouble. In much the same way, Dolores Santana is on the same roller coaster ride. From one moment to the next, you never know what she'll do or say, because she doesn't know herself and she's comfortable with surfing her emotions to wherever they'll take her. Unpredictability can be fun, but it has an annoying and wearying side too. It can be exhausting.

So are you bipolar?

No, I'm Spanish. That's the best I can say in my defense. (Laughs.)

Exploitation Film’s Great Contribution to Popular Culture: Showmanship!

There’s no question about it: when it comes to exploitation — cinema and novels (most often regarded as “pulps”) — there’s often a huge disparity between what’s promised and the final product. Many would strongly argue that the true legacy of exploitation (and its two main sub-genres: horror and sexploitation) exists in the marketing: the lurid book covers and movie posters and trailers produced to advertise “projections” of a product that the makers only wished they produced. These book covers and movie posters and trailers are in fact exploitation’s true cultural contribution — and a fun, lively, and vastly entertaining one at that.
Are these artifacts — obvious by-products of a need to sell a dream or fantasy project — art? Of course, they are. In some strange way they’re all the more endearing because they emerge out of the dreamer’s starry-eyed wish to produce work of such heart-stopping greatness that, by their mere existence, they would catapult you out of the tedium of your daily lives. And that’s part of what I love most about exploitation — even for its let-down “real” product — its feverish, often  demented earnestness and desire to entertain and make you go “Holy Shit!”

There’s no question about it: Exploitation is about putting on “a show” … or, as it’s been often stated, more about selling “the sizzle” not the steak. And now this — COMING SOON TO THIS THEATER! THE GREATEST EXTRAVAGANZA EVER MADE!!!!

IS THIS EXPLOITATION NOVEL RIGHT FOR YOU?

"Notebook" for the novel --> http://permanentobscurity.com/

I need to emphasize that PERMANENT OBSCURITY is not "erotica," although it has BDSM overtones (leaning toward so-called "femdom"). It's really a dark comedy about bohemia and the difficulty of relationships (female/male and female/female) and finally the big question for anyone in the arts (or in the tabloid media): sudden fame vs. permanent anonymity. The style of the novel is inspired by '60s over-the-top sexploition films like those of Russ Meyer (FASTER PUSSYCAT KILL KILL, BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS) and those Something Weird Videos, like A SWEET SICKNESS and BAD GIRLS GO TO HELL [so-called “cautionary tales”]) -- updated to the Bush era (circa 2006).

PERMANENT OBSCURITY: Or a Cautionary Tale of Two Girls and Their Misadventures with Drugs, Pornography and Death by Dolores Santana (as told to Richard Perez)
Written in the 3 parts:

PERMANENT OBSCURITY: PART 1 - THE KINKY HOOK
Whereupon we are introduced to Dolores and Serena and their kinky shenanigans.

PERMANENT OBSCURITY: PART 2 - STRANGE HUNGERS
Whereupon Dolores and Serena grapple with relationship/sexuality issues, life-threatening drug dealers, irreversible money woes. Culminating in a desperate attempt at making a so-called "femdom" film.

PERMANENT OBSCURITY: PART 3 - NO MAN'S LAND
Whereupon Dolores and Serena find themselves in a place not expected. Namely, hell.

PERMANENT OBSCURITY by Richard Perez : excerpt ( pgs. 252 - 257 )

"Dolores and Serena make a Femdom Movie!...
Or, at least they stress out about it!"

NOVEL EXCERPT: Pages 210 - 213

>< >< ><

To begin with, I had to get my ass back to Brooklyn.
I couldn’t ask Serena to come back to the East Village. Not now, maybe not ever.
We met up at Verb Café on Bedford, where I finally got my much needed, long-delayed breakfast and coffee and discussed damage control.
“Okay, now that we’re in this fuckin’ hole,” I said to her. “How do we dig our way out?”
“We need to get organized,” she insisted. “First, I’ll meet with the writer, get his help, arrange to pick up the van, get the lighting equipment.” On and on, she babbled, like she was possessed.
Nearly everything she mentioned had to do with the movie shoot.
“Serena,” I told her. “You can’t pin all your hopes on this thing flying.”
“I am pinning my hopes on it,” she replied. “Because I know the money’s there! Ready to drop straight into our hands!”
She went on to say how she emailed the scenario to the LA tool last night and how he’d already called her up this afternoon full of enthusiasm. “Dolores, he was impressed. Seriously. Said he could see ‘clear potential’ in it. Even went so far as to say that if we pulled it off, this could be a whole new beginning, that he could ‘envision a whole lineup of video products’ with me as the star and director-slash-writer.”
“Writer?” I said. “But you didn’t write it.”
“Well,” she chuckled, a little embarrassed. “I kinda had to fudge that. Tell him it was mine. Didn’t think the writer would mind.”
“You better hope the writer really is submissive,” I told her.
“I already talked to him on the phone,” she said. “I think he’ll be all right with it. I mean, I think he’ll be fine.”
“Who is he?”
“Who, the writer?” said Serena, with a shrug and a smirk. “Oh, ya know. Just another loser.”
And just how she said it stuck in my throat, right along with the dry carrot muffin and bitter overpriced coffee.
I got put out and she could see it.
“Kidding, I’m just kidding!” she said, changing her tact. “He’s just y’know, a writer with a shitload of unpublished work. I think he also wrote for The Voice. Or maybe The New York Times, I’m not sure.”
“He seemed okay, though? Cool?”
“Cool?” she frowned, giving me a look. “He’s a writer, okay?”
“But, I mean, laid-back?”
“Yeah, maybe.” She shrugged. “I dunno. I still gotta meet him.”
“And when are you planning on doing that?”
“Soon. Right here. In like an hour,” she said. “Wanna hang around?”
I still felt nauseated. “Not likely. You take care of it.”
“I will. I mean, I plan to take care of it,” she said. “In the meantime, I need to ask you a favor.”
“What’s that?”
“Camera equipment.”
“Yeah?”
“I need you to talk to Primus.”
“Primus?”
“The NYU student,” she said.
“I know who he fuckin’ is.”
“He’s worked on some porn films. Even made a short video of his own, he told me.”
“When did he tell you that?”
“At the bar. Otto’s, remember? You left?”
“Oh yeah.”
“Yeah. So he has access to equipment. From the shoots. Or from the school or whatever. Can’t remember which.”
“And what makes you think he’ll help out?”
“He won’t help out. He’ll just borrow us some equipment: a camera and a few more things.”
“Maybe he can help us shoot it? Since he’s done this before.”
Serena snapped, “No, Dolores! I don’t want that. Some dickhead, hanging around. Taking control. While we’re both vulnerable and exposed!”
“Oh, shit!” Of course I forgot about that.
“We can do this,” she said. “Just you and me. On the downlow.”
“And the sub.”
“And the sub. Whose name is Dick.”
“’Dick’?”
“That’s the writer. And our actor/performer.”
“You spoke to him about that?”
She nodded. “He agreed to be in it. Said he even may find it ‘therapeutic.’”
“Does he know he’s doing it for nothing?”
“I made that crystal clear. He seemed fine with it. Still wants to be a part. Even offered to help set up equipment.”
“Are you sure we can trust him?”
“Why not? He’s already invested time and effort on the project.”
I finished slurping down my coffee and offered Serena the rest of my muffin, since I couldn’t seem to keep it down.
“So what about Primus?” I asked.
“What about him?”
“Why do you need me to speak to him?”
“Because he’s already agreed to help us get the stuff. He said so, over the phone.”
“Yeah, so?”
“So, I said I’d pick it up from him, in person. Only, I can’t go back into the East Village. I mean, right now.”
“Serena, what else did you tell him?”
“Whaddaya mean?”
“You didn’t make any promises, did you?”
“What promises?”
“He’s expecting you to show up in person, right?”
“Yeah, so?”
“Was he expecting to see you? Get something from you? I can’t see why he’d go out of his way to help us out.”
“He likes me.”
“I know that.”
“He really likes me.”
“Okay,” I said.
“I also promised to give him a blow job.”
“You fuckin’ what!”
“Just a quick one, D.”
“Serena!”
“More like a hand job. With a little bit of lip action.”
“Oh right.”
“No big deal.”
“Damn right, no big deal,” I told her. “’Cause I ain’t helping you out there!”
“Hah?”
“You’re the director, you suck cock!”
“I wasn’t telling you to suck his cock. Just mention the fact that I can’t be in the East Village. At this very moment.”
“You’re fucking insane, you know that?” I shook my head, in disbelief. “Do I even know you?”
Serena took a moment. “Listen. I’m not saying you should give any blow jobs.”
“Oh really? Is that what you’re saying?”
“I was just kidding about that, anyway…. Talk. Just talk to the guy,” she said. “That’s all I’m asking.”
“Then what?”
“Then grab his equipment, hail a cab and beat it the hell out of there!”
I snorted. “Should I steal his wallet, too?”
Serena said, “Just make sure his daddy’s charge card is in it!”
“Bad. You’re bad, girl!”
“Fuck, Dolores. This is about getting the assholes off our backs! We only have one chance.”
“So I’m supposed to do your dirty work?”
“Listen, I’m doing all that I can,” she said. “I can’t meet with the writer, get the funding for the movie, work out all the kinks and deal with some horny-ass fratboy.”
“So that’s my job?”
“We’re partners, Dolores. We’ll be splitting the take 50/50. Just talk to him, that’s all I’m saying. Make him a bunch of empty promises. We’re filmmakers now. We need to talk like filmmakers. You know the drill. Offer him percentages.”
“What?”
“Offer him ‘points.’”
“I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.”
“’The back end,’ I don’t know. Promise him something. Anything.”
“But no blowjobs.”
“Just tell him I owe him one. Owe him big time. Tell him I love him. Anything.”
“Whoa, you have gone Hollywood!”
“Let’s hope so, Dolores. Let’s hope we can parlay this little experiment into a string of projects. ’Cause once we got that, we got money. And once we got money, all our problems will be solved!”
True.
I suppose it came down to that.

Girl had it all worked out.
Obviously.
She was the sun. And I was a revolving planet.

But there was no denying it: Serena had enthusiasm and a singularity of vision.
Or something.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~: About the Author:
Initially published small literary magazines, Richard Perez has also written for The New York Times (a newspaper he doesn't read.) His first novel, The Losers' Club (aka: The Losers' Club: Complete Restored Edition) has three foreign translations to date: Korean, Turkish, Italian. PERMANENT OBSCURITY: or a Cautionary Tale of Two Girls and Their Misadventures with Drugs, Pornography, and Death — his second novel — also reflects his infatuation with bohemia and willful nonconformists.
