It's annoying how people who consider themselves "open minded" stick to what's familiar, instead of venturing out into new territory. I don't know why more people don't read fiction. Non-fiction is not particularly making them "smart." People are just so easily lead by the nose to believe that what's current or considered "news" is more important. Book companies profit on that too. Non-fiction books are often obsolete after a while. So, people need to buy more, etc. There's money to be made selling something with an expiration date.
